David took over as our Musical Director in 2010. Woodhouse was the first brass band David ever played with, joining back in the 1980’s when still at school. David joined on Soprano cornet but quickly found his place with Bb Cornet and that remains his main instrument to this day. He had a spell playing with Killamarsh Band (sadly no longer in existence) then many years with Chapeltown Band when he spent several years as principal cornet with the band. He was with Chapeltown during the band’s spell in the Championship section – the top league of brass banding in this country.
He then took a backward step from banding to concentrate on other interests, but when the time was right for his son Daniel to join his first band, Woodhouse was the obvious choice. It was only a few months before David was invited (or press-ganged depending on how you look at it!) into the MD’s role.
The step backwards from playing didn’t last long either… David’s now back playing solo cornet with Chapeltown and Daniel has joined the band on euphonium. Having won the Second Section Yorkshire Area in 2016, Chapeltown followed it up with promotion then took the First Section Yorkshire Area title in 2016. promotion again now means that our MD and principal euphonium are also both Championship Section players.
As well as his conducting and cornet playing, David also plays the piano and has a history of recorder and violin playing but he keeps quiet about that!
When not playing or conducting, David’s a Trustee of Chesterfield Canal Trust which means he can indulge his love of canals and boats, and during the day masquerades as IT Manager for a large recycling company.
